Summer Job Exploration Training for Youth

Each summer, Workshops, Inc. offers Job Exploration Training (JET), a summer learning program for local high school students with disabilities. Our program gives them the opportunity to experience a variety of workplaces with differing work experiences, along with a job readiness classroom component to gain skills that will prepare them to reach their highest vocational potential.

For the 2019 JET program, we partnered with the Birmingham Zoo to provide a great opportunity for our students, and an enthusiastic workforce for the Zoo. Our students practiced some great career building skills including landscaping, picking up trash inside the zoo, and assisting with the Birmingham Zoo Café catering! In addition to working at the Zoo, the students hung out around Workshops bottling and labeling Avondale Mercantile Bugg Off insect repellent - available now at Alabama Goods!, grew herbs and vegetables in the garden, and had fun while practicing soft skills like taking directions from a supervisor and getting along with co-workers.They even learned how to change a flat tire. This program strives to provide students with important life skills to allow them to be successful in the workforce and reach their full potential.
